When you first take a dog or puppy home, you will most likely have to potty train your dog. There are a few people who are luck out and get an already potty trained dog, but this is pretty rare. The truth is, most new owners will have to train their dogs. This can be scary but it is a lot easier than it sounds.

Patience and consistency is the most important thing to know when you need to potty train a dog.  You can’t be relaxed one day and strict the next.  If you do this, it will take a long while to succeed in potty training.  Keeping the right mindset and  concentrating on what needs to be done will make it fun and exciting.  You need to first decide where you want the dog to go potty.  Are you wanting it to go outside or on a pee pad inside?

If you have decided to go with the pee pad then you must select a place where you will want that pad to be each and every time. It is important that the dog knows exactly where the pee pad is at all times without being surprised. This will lead to fewer accidents. If you find that your dog selected another area of the house, such as the corner of the dining room for its bathroom instead of the pad it is time to get to work. Working with your dog’s current behaviour is how to potty train it.

Instead of simply shouting on where the dog go to the bathroom, just place the pee pad at the spot.By doing this, the dog will start going on it and you will be happy for it.After a few days pass, simply move the pee pad a few feet away in the direction where you want to keep it.After every few days keep on moving the pee pad,as your dog gets comfortable with it,to the place where you actually want your dog to go.

No matter whether indoor or out,  when you potty train a dog you should be careful to only give food and water during set meal times, so that there are less accidents. For outdoor training, wait about twenty minutes after eating, then put the leash on and take your dog outside, but do not let it just wander around as it pleases.  Instead, lead it directly to a designated spot, and when your dog does what it’s expected to,  give lots of acknowledgment along with a treat.

Unlike the dogs being trained for the pee pads, your dog will not have a means to properly relieve itself. How to potty train a dog for going to the bathroom outside also means teaching it how to hold its bladder.

How Scary Can The Birds Be?

the Birds

Some birds have a way of bringing out the worst in humanity. Perhaps it is an unconscious fear implanted by movies and literature. Take for example the Alfred Hitchcock movie “The Birds” and you get a sense of how ominous and even perhaps deadly some wild birds are to mankind. Look at what a flock of crows is called. It is called a murder. Certain birds have been associated with death and even as messengers of death. Perhaps it is just a bum rap but regardless, mankind has this fascination with anything avian.

The raven and the crow have definitely been portrayed in a bad light as the birds that you do not want to have around. Edgar Allen Poe turned the raven into a sinister messenger of doom with its cries of “nevermore.” Readers have been fascinated with his portrayal of the raven. Even fairytales have plugged away at the image of the crow/raven. Take for example Disney’s classic tale of “Sleeping Beauty.” The villainess has a crow/raven that is used as her evil spy.

The wild bird definitely deserves some respect. It is just like other wild animal. You have to keep in mind that it is territorial, will defend itself and has to find a food source. And while crows/ravens have received some bad press thanks to authors and filmmakers, vultures and other carrion eating birds have repulsed mankind for eons. This bird species is a scavenger. Anytime you see vultures or buzzards circling in the air, you know that there is either something dying or something that has already died. Most people do not set up bird feeders to attract these types of birds. They want colorful birds, songbirds and delicate hummingbirds to grace their gardens and yards.

Perhaps it is time that people got over their fear of the birds that have gotten such a tough break in literature and movies. You do not have to worry about going outside and a murder of crows attacking you for no reason. The raven is not a symbol of death or a portent of bad things ahead. They are just two legged, winged wild animals that serve a specific function in the animal kingdom.

Excitement Of Nature Through A Bird House

There are many different types of bird species, each with different nesting needs.  That means that bird houses must be constructed according to the type of bird that the person wants to nest in the house.  In addition, there are other animals that enjoy bird houses for homes, such as squirrels and even wasps.  Since this is the case, it is often wise to build several different bird houses at a time so that the unwelcome guests can use one or two and the birds that are desired in the homes can use the other ones.  There are some species of birds that are on the decline in their populations, so finding bird house plans that will support or attract these species to nest is helpful in preserving them for the future, such as the bluebird.

Bird House: Building a Home

There are some species of birds that require a bird house to be mounted on a pole so that pests and predators are less likely to be able to disturb the nest.  The main predators that can disturb nesting birds are those that can climb into treesto get into the nest, such as cats, snakes, squirrels and raccoons.  These creatures enjoy a tasty snack of the bird’s eggs or even the little nestling, so it is important to plan the bird house in such a way so as to provide the best protection possible for the nesting mother and eggs.

Size of the bird house should be according to the size of the bird that will be nesting in it.  For smaller birds, the entrance hole should be smaller, which helps the bird to stay safer from predators since it is more difficult for them to reach into the bird house for the eggs.  In addition, there should be a drainage hole in the bottom of the bird house so that any water that happens to get into the house or any waste material can filter out through the bottom of the box rather than sitting and getting moldy.

A bird house should be built of wood that naturally deters insects from the house, such as cedar.  In this way the home does not get overrun with these pests, thus deterring the birds from nesting in it.To view the nest without disturbing it and to see the progress in the nest there should be a front that opens on hinges.

Ionic Air Purifiers – Safety Is Top Priority

Safety assumes top priority in the selection of an ionic air purifier for use in the home, office, factory or school.

Existing ionic air purifier technology, regardless of whether they originate in North America, Europe, Japan or China produce a primary beneficial reactive agent. These reactive agents may be negative ions, bipolar ions, plasmacluster ions and so on. Their prime objective is to eliminate contaminants in the air we breathe. Much has been published on the efficacy of these reactive agents in eliminating contaminants. What we do not know is whether these same potent reactive agents also cause harm to delicate human tissues such as those that line our breathing passages from the trachea to the lungs.

There is also an information vacuum about whether there are other by-products and if these are harmful to human tissues as well. However, in the industry, it is known that current ionic air purifier technology results in the inadvertent production of by-products. In sufficient concentrations, these may prove harmful to human tissue. One of the main by-products which attracts much attention is ozone, which in high concentrations is known to be harmful to human tissues.

In the light of the above, the issue of safety for the user of an ionic air purifier has to be addressed from these two perspectives:

(1) Potential harm from the beneficial reactive agents, and

(2) Potential harm from the unintended by-products.

Our intensive though by no means exhaustive research on these two perspectives have been condensed into two detailed write-ups that are featured on Ezinearticles.com.

Don’t miss these 2 in-depth Ezine articles. To read, click on the Ezine Author Badge on The Ionic Air Purifier Blog.

Subject to their terms and conditions, Ezinearticles.com allows publishers to freely reproduce these two articles. So help yourself, publish the two articles on your websites as a complete set, via these links:

(1) Beneficial reactive agents

(2) Unintended by-products

In addition, keep updated with our progress as we research other aspects of the very broad and constantly changing field of ionic air purifier technologies.

All about one of the newest designer pet, Teacup Pigs

People think all kind of thoughts when you mention pigs but hardly one of pigs in the house. Teacup potbellied pigs are becoming increasingly popular as domestic pets around the country. Teacup Pigs come in very many colors and are much smaller than the standard farm pig and the regular potbelly pig. Not really the size of a teacup. But compared to a full grown regular pig at 600-800 pounds or a full grown regular potbelly pig at 120 – 200 pounds then they are teacup. Fully grown at 2-3 years of age the teacups weigh in around 40 – 65 pounds and 11 – 14″ tall. Low maintenance and living 15-20 years makes an ideal pet. Teacup potbellied pigs are popular city pets, and their small size lends itself well to apartment living. Pigs litter box train very quickly.

The regular potbellied pig originated in Vietnam, and is a combination of several breeds. They will breed with other types of pigs even farm pigs causing mixed breeds. The teacup pigs were bred first in Devon, England.

Not all veterinarians treat pigs making owning one more troublesome that a cat or dog. All types of pigs need maintenance with tusks trimmed and hooves trimmed. A veterinarian, or an owner who has learned how from a doctor, can perform these tasks. Pigs will need to be spayed or neutered and require regular vaccinations.

Teacup potbellied pigs make enjoyable pets because they are very intelligent and affectionate. Like many animals they are prone to laziness and aggression and must be exercised to keep them from getting to fat and antisocial. At times, an adult pig may raise a challenge against the owner in so-called “dominance aggression”, much like any pet will at first and they will need to be reprimanded gently yet strongly, and taught to respect the owner’s authority. They take well to positive reinforcement when they are behaving well, but should not be physically punished. Properly motivated these intelligent animals learn tricks very easily like sit and playing golf.

Pigs should have daily leash-led walks or they will gain weight. If you find that your pig is getting too fat you can scatter raw oatmeal where they have to search for it and doesn’t amount to much to eat. This gives them something to eat and exercise at the same time. Of course this is when they are outside. Pigs just really love to eat, just like children they lean toward the high carbohydrate unhealthy type, please restrict your pet’s availab.ility. Pigs love to eat so steps must be taken to keep them out of the kitchen. Special pig feed can be purchased in a pet store or special-ordered and local feed stores are starting to carry the specialty feed. Pigs are omnivores, equally interested in vegetables, meats, sweets, and carbohydrate-based foods.

Pigs are best kept in pairs or groups if they are kept outside as they are social animals. Pigs want a lot of attention. Like children they need toys to play with so they can amuse themselves. This keeps them stimulated and active. Because of their intelligence, if pigs get bored they may become destructive and troublesome. Inadequate attention during playtime can compel pigs to do anything from rooting up plants to taking up linoleum floors and eating drywall. If you are not keeping your pig outside in a confined area then they need their own confined area in the house. They are clean and essentially odor-free, so it is not usually difficult to find a room where they can roam.

Like any pet, a teacup potbellied pig is a serious commitment, and requires some specialized care that demands time and resources. Do not consider owning a teacup pig or potbelly pig without doing a lot of homework to make sure that you and a pig will be compatible. Shelters are overflowing with abandoned pigs whose owners did not anticipate the kind of attention that their pet would need. However, the intelligence, affection and personality of a well trained, adequately cared for teacup potbellied pig can be very rewarding for the prepared, responsible owner.

Changing Character Of Veterinary Medicine

Many of pet owners willingly say that caring for their pets is not only necessary however it is very expensive also. Therefore it is not surprising to learn that part of the reason for this costly nature of vet care is the dramatic changes taking place in modern veterinary medicine. The days have long gone by since James Herriot and other vets treated an animal regardless of which type of animal it was and furthermore were given to making house calls as well.

High Costs

In these modern times dogs, men’s best friends, when they need vet care will require to be taken to visit the vet clinic where the costs of the visit and treatment can prove to be rather high. Today, the study of veterinary medicine has undergone a sea change and the costs involved in becoming a veterinarian too are on the high side.

Veterinary medicine implies the study of correct medical procedures as well methods of making appropriate diagnoses of animals based on principles of therapies that help treat domestic, companion as well as exotic animals. The study of veterinary medicine is important for protecting the animal kingdom as well as controlling the further spreading of diseases.

People that study veterinary medicine need to acquire the necessary skills as well as knowledge in a variety of disciplines whose main intent is to prevent as well as control disease in domestic as well as in wild animals.

You will be totally surprised to know that that the study of veterinary medicine began in the ancient Indian and Egyptian civilizations that date back to about the year 1900 BC. From those early times to the present day, veterinary medicine has changed in form and content and today we are far better equipped to keep the animal kingdom in better health despite the spread of certain diseases in different parts of the world that are infecting and killing wild animals.

Veterinary medicine is as old as the mountains and there is in fact special bond that exists between man and animal that drives us into learning how to provide better dental, surgical as well as medical help to any animal in need of such care.

World War II affected veterinary medicine in a big way and in fact there was major fear during those years among the officials of the US government that their stock of cattle would be sabotaged in a bid to cripple the food supply in the country. This led to more and more people being hired into becoming doctors of veterinary medicine whose mission was to prevent such sabotage. Though nothing untoward happened it set the stage for greater interest in becoming qualified veterinarians.

Choosing a pet? Heres some help

Unsure of what pet to get- heres a few bullet points about a few animals you may consider.

  • Cats. Except when they want feeding cats are quiet animals. Well groomed and dont need taking out for walks like dogs. Their nocturnal animals so they only really come to life at night, going out to bring you back live mice as a present bless ‘em. They costs alittle less than dogs, especially on insurance.
  • Dogs. Are they ‘mans best friend’? Your canine chum will require being taken for a walk often, which can be exercise for both dog and owner. Dogs can be very loyal creatures but will need some training.
  • Rodents. Hamsters, Rats, Gerbils and Mice. These tiny guys have a lifespan generally of about a year and a half, but have been known to go on longer. Make sure you get the right cage size -a mice can squeeze through some bars and rats need enough room. Remember a wheel for exercise, but replace it if it starts squeaking so your not kept up all night.
  • Guinea pigs and Rabbits. I hope your fast, because so our rabbits and guinea pigs, and sometimes returning them to their hutch is a task of its own. Either animal will require a hutch to stay in, plus a run for them to enjoy in the summer, but not escaping from the garden. Remember to throw in some fresh carrots/ lettuce for them to go with thier feed, and hutches should be moved into a warmer room in the winter to make sure they dont freeze.
  • Snakes. A snake can be very costly given the accommodation they need, they equipment to control the temperature and mice for them to eat. The cost of the snake is going to depend on the size of the snake.
  • Spiders. You’ll need bugs for them to eat, a small container and a wife who wont freak out if they escape.

Why is The Cat Temperament Different To The Dog Temperament

Many people don’t understand the reasons why the cat temperament is different to the dog temperament. There are people who try to use the same methods to train a cat, that they would use on a dog, the fact that they are 2 completely different animals will not allow this to work.

A cat is a solitary creature; most cats in the wild live and hunt on their own. Cats are solitary hunters and not pack animals. By contrast you find that dogs are happier in a pack. If you have a dog in the family, then the dog will regard the family as a pack, and it will have some sort of position within that pack.

The cat temperament differs in the fact that it will not regard you or members of your family as a pack, but individuals similar to itself, living under the same conditions. Dogs don't like to be away from their pack, and in the modern world the dogs owners are the pack. Most of the time cats are pretty content in their own company. However if a cat has from a young age been bought up in an environment where it gets lots of attention, and that attention is removed, it can get bored and start to become destructive. However these types of cats problems will not last, and as soon as you start to give your cat more attention, it should revert to its original habits.

Though cats seem quite content being on their own, they do create strong bonds with the people around them. The bond that a cat forms with its owner is important, although a cat will probably try to play it a bit cool compared to a dog.

Another difference between the cat temperament and the temperament of a dog is that a dog will burst with happiness at the slightest bit of attention. Making eye contact, talking to it, or grooming it will send bursts of pleasure through your dogs body. The cat on the other hand doesn't need you to brush it, it is more than capable of cleaning itself, make eye contact with the cat and it won't see it as another means of attention.

Your cat requires varying types of attention, unlike a dog which goes gooey eyed with joy when you just look at it. Cats like contact and a cat wants you to talk to it. Clearly it can't understand the words that you say, but it will notice the tone of your words. Make those words gentle and loving, and that will endear you to your cat. Learn more about the cat temperament through its body language. Try to learn from your cat's body language when it is annoyed or when it is content. Start to read the signs as to what your cat is thinking and you will a step closer to understanding the cat temperament.
