Advanced Dog Training Points For Conditioning Your Dog

Akeisha wrote to me with some terribly good questions. I’ve included her letter (and my responses) below:

Hi,

It’s Akeisha again.

I do see what you mean if it’s on all the time the dog can soon forget it’s on and then can behave regardless. Ok, thus the dog never wears a buckle collar once more? This is often what irks me. I want to be in a position to regulate the dog regardless of what collar is on not just the pinch or it might be no collar in any respect and the dog still behaves. What if the owner for a few reason soars the collar then they place the buckle collar on for ID but then forget the pinch collar? Then there is no control.

[Adam Replies] WRONG! The dog gets conditioned. Set out the collar for awhile. Does not matter.

Do you ever in the coaching return to the buckle collar after months of what you advocate with a dog that’s proud of doing the commands?

[Adam Replies] Yes, the dog will the command because he’s happy and he likes it. But eventually, there can be something that tempts him. This is where conditioning comes in.

Suppose of it like this: You’ve lived in the identical house for ten years, right? You stand up in the middle of the night and you reach for the sunshine switch that is to the LEFT of the door. Pretty soon, you get conditioned to reach out to the LEFT of the door.

At some point you travel and stay in an exceedingly hotel. You rouse in the center of the night and reach out to the LEFT of the door for the switch… although you cognitively saw {that the} switch is on the RIGHT.

After all, you will come to life for many nights– maybe even weeks or months– and still reach out to the LEFT, although the switch is currently on the right. Some people will continue progressing to the LEFT for the remainder of their lives. Some can begin attending to the right.

Those individuals want to be reinforced. Get it?

Motivational corrections if on the proper dog will not frighten them or make them hate you I recognize but aren’t there different ways except using the collar that can eventually be established thought training that can permit you to take the collar off and have management?

[Adam Replies] Yeah, this method you’ll take the collar off and have management, ONCE THE DOG IS CONDITIONED. But eventually you’ll have to go back and reinforce, for many dogs. And positively if you start expecting to work the dog around new distractions that it’s never been proofed around, like chickens if the dog has never seen chickens.

Look, I don’t make the rules. The dog is not a robot that you’ll be able to suddenly say, “He’s done” and expect him to act consistently for the rest of his life. Like all relationship you have got with another person, boundaries need to be established and maintained. The dog is like your wife or husband… they will eventually check you. :)

Last query, how can the dog not realize the don’t have it on since it feels a ton different than the buckle? Its like my id around my neck at college I have gotten used to it however I do notice when it’s off? Just for the record I have no drawback with pinches, many members in my four-H club use them and that they work nice on the correct dog.

[Adam Replies] Because the method you should be using the pinch collar is {that the} dog (since he has restricted reason and logic) does not KNOW that it’s the pinch collar that allows you to offer him smart corrections. However it’s a lot of than the pinch collar. If I put the dog in a very range of tiny yards, with no collar on … and I’m in a position to chase him down and build him come back to me, if he doesn’t come back when I call… then the dog can learn THE UNDERLYING PREMISE that I will make him do it, if he doesn’t. Therefore, the pinch collar and also the long line create my job easier, however ultimately, the dog knows (or he thinks at least) that I’m a man of my word and once I tell him to try and do one thing: If he does not do it, I’m going to form him do it. And his life can be a heap more fun if he does it willingly. Therefore the dog starts to extrapolate this principle to alternative commands, too.

Hope I am not being irritating I just like to grasp why certain trainers worth sure methods over others since I love competing in obedience with my dog.

[Adam Replies] Keep training.

That is all for currently, people!
Adam
