Well hamsters are great…Just go to the petstore and pick one up I can usually get everything I need (hamster too) for about $50. Just make sure the dog does not get ahold of him!!!

If the children are older, and not rough with animals, then a cat would be a great addition (if the dog has been properly socialized with them). Indoor only, of course.

I have a tarantula, and let me tell you, they are one of most mantinence- free pets ever! i love mine. They meet all your criteria perfectly EXCEPTfor the children and dogs one. I highly advise against this. This is more of a look, but not touch pet. But they are fantastically easy. And interesting.

In my experience, every animal needs a little effort in the fields of cleaning. Whichever you choose to bring home, make sure that you research a lot about it. I’m going to recommend a guinea pig to you. They are sweet, sociable animals and love being pet and held. They are not very aggressive with humans, so would rarely bite the kiddos. You will have to clean their cage once a week, but maybe this can help teach the kids responsibility? They eat pellets, vegetables, and hay and also require some sort of a water bottle or bowl. I’ll attach some great guides that will make your decision more thorough.

try an iguana. It is definitely interesting and my teacher used to bring her pet iguana to school and he was fine with the kids, but I am not sure about the dog. Lizards are fun too.
