We are already having trouble keeping them all from being critically endangered as it is, so there isn't going to be a breeding experiment to size them down. It's not only the size that makes them pets, it's the instinct. Look at wild cats. They're not bigger than a dog, but they're wild. And can kill you if you get to close. Look at horses, there's wild ones. They're not that different from normal race horses, but still they're violent. The day you can have a tiger pet is when they can genetically engineer their wild nature. Not their size. Not really, it’ll eventually try to kill you in your sleep.
It’s not only the size that makes them pets, it’s the instinct.
