How Bark Control Collars Work

If your dog barks too much – and you’re ready to do something about it – you probably should get a bark control collar. Bark control collars come in several models, and selecting the one most appropriate for your dog depends on various factors

Why Do Dogs Bark So Much?

The first thing you should do is find out why your dog is barking more than usual. The dog might be trying to indicate through barking that it’s ill, scared, or lonely. If such is the case, then a bark control collar isn’t a good idea. The solution to these situations lies elsewhere. But for dogs that bark just because they are bored, the bark control collar can help them break the barking habit

Choosing an Appropriate Bark Control Collar

Bark control collars come in three different types. There are even some bark control dog collars that combine two of these types.

First of all, there is  the citronella collar that emit a strong citrus smell whenever the dog starts to bark. Because dogs don’t care for this smell, they will eventually stop barking. Some collars will emit a hissing sound before the citrus spray, so dogs that stop the barking at this point can save themselves from the citrus smell.

Electronic collars will shock the dog when it barks. The shock is harmless and not painful, just like the one you get when you handle fabric, but it is enough for the dog to stop barking. Most of these also have a failsafe mechanism to shut off after a certain amount of time.

The ultrasound or sonic collar sounds a high pitched tone that people can’t hear. The dog doesn’t like the high pitched sound and will stop barking to get it to end.

One of the biggest benefits of a bark control collar is that the dog will be being trained all the time, not just when the owners are around. This helps with dogs that are alone while the owners are away at work, or even just asleep.

If your dog barks because it’s ill or lonely, then a bark control collar is not advisable. bark control collars should be used only on dogs that bark as a bad habit. They work using citronella spray, sonic or ultrasonic sounds, or electronic static pulse.

Bark Control Collar FAQ

A bark control collar may be utilized as a safe and efficient training implement for putting an end to your dog’s annoying or excessive barking. Following are the most frequently asked points I’m asked to clarify from pet owners interested in learning more about bark collars and how they are used.

Bark Collars – Harmless or Harmful?

There has been a lot of controversy about the humaneness of training with a no bark collar. In my opinion, anti bark collars are definitely humane.

There are several different kinds of bark collars (Aboistop and Citronella collars, Ultra Sonic Collars and Shock Correction Bark Collars). For the intention of this post, I’ll center on shock collars since most of the debate about safety and humaneness will often center on this type of collar.

Shock correction bark collars work by delivering a harmless static electric shock to admonish your dog when she barks. Some collars sense barking through use of vibration sensor, some collars use a microphone to recognize barking by sound; many collars use a combination of vibration and sound.

The static correction received is exactly like the jolt you feel when you walk across a carpeted floor in your stocking feet and then come in contact with a metal object. You also may have experienced this when you pull your clothing out of the clothes dryer during the winter and they have “static cling”. The resulting sensation startles you, but isn’t painful.

When used properly, combined with uniform training, shock bark control collars can be a safe, humane way to put a stop excessive or annoying barking.

What type of bark collar works best?

The answer to this question lies with you, and your dog of course. As a pet owner, you know your dog best. Some things to consider when shopping for a bark collar:

  • Your dog’s age: Bark collars or dog training collars should not be used on a dog younger than 6 months of age.
  • Your dog’s size & weight: Your dog’s weight and collar size need to be considered when looking at collars. A bark collar for little dogs won’t be effective for a bigger or stubborn breed.
  • Your dog’s nature: Is your dog extremely difficult to train? Shy and  timid? There are bark collars specially created for both of these extremes, as well as standard collars that will work with most dogs. A very timid dog may react better to a Spray Bark Collar or Ultrasonic system. On the other hand, a larger dog will generally respond better to a bark control collar specifically made for big dogs.

Do bark control collars always work?

The success rate for bark collars is good, but you should keep in mind that bark devices might not work in every circumstance. One way to help promote success is to make a commitment to consistent training. Opt for the bark collar that conforms best with your dog’s personality and size, use consistent teaching, and you’ll soon be enjoying quieter days.
