All dogs bark, it’s their way to communicate a message.

A dog barks for different reasons: to greet, to alert, because they are bored, to get attention or when they are excited.

A solution of vinegar and water – mix a proportion of 7/8 of water & 1/8 of vinegar together. Pour the mixture into a water pistol or what children call “super soaker” to shoot from a longer distance.

Aim and shoot at his chest whenever he/she can’t stop barking even on your command. Dogs loathe the smell of vinegar and will usually back off and stop barking. She/He’ll even sneeze a few times. It will do it no harm, so you do not need to worry.

Don’t forget to praise him/her when he/she stops barking.

It’s important to know that your dog might still be barking noisily and disrupting your neighborhood when you are not at home. In this case, you’ll need some training equipment known as “bark collars” to help train it.

There are several types of bark collars on the market.

Some of these collars send an electric shock to your dog when he/shehe barks, some make a high pitch sound or emit a squirt of citronella, which is annoying but safe for your dog.

Usually, these collars can help to make your dog stop barking.

I would personally recommend the high pitch sound or citronella collars. They are very effective and much more humane dog training tools.

Last night I was serenaded throughout the night by my neighbor’s noisy pack of dogs. There happened to be a full moon last night, and the coyote’s of the area were howling and barking nearby, driving the dogs crazy. My dogs also joined in with the others when they first heard the coyotes start in, but as soon as I told them to quiet down, they obeyed. Apparently the neighbor’s sleep like the dead, because they never quiet their dogs at night.

This made me realize that even though the barking dogs were a real nuisance, they thought they were barking to protect their territory from the pack of coyotes-a very natural instinct.I felt like the owners were at least as much at fault as their dogs-if not more-for not correcting the problem.

As a dog owner, it is up to you to be responsible enough to keep any type of barking, whether it starts for a good reason or not, under control. Whenever my dogs bark for a valid reason, I want to control it, but not stop it.

• When something is approaching you, perhaps another dog or a stranger, your dog will bark to warn you. When your dog does this type of barking, it is to warn his master, and this is a good thing you won’t want to stop. However, you should be able to get your dog to stop his barking as soon as you command him to. One example would be quieting your dog when he barks at someone who has parked in front of your house that you know is not dangerous-he should quiet down as soon as you say so. On the other hand, if it is someone you want to discourage from coming onto your property (for example,maybe some over-zealous religious types), well then, you can let the barking continue a little longer.   • Dogs will often bark for the good reason that they are happy and excited . When I play with my dogs, they bark at me and at each other-but all in fun. I like to be greeted at the gate by my dogs, and I don’t mind a couple greeting barks at all.   • Your dog may start barking when you first come home. This is a very common since your dog is excited to see you again, and this is acceptable as long as the barking is very brief. I like to be greeted at the gate by my dogs, and I don’t mind a couple greeting barks at all. It would be a problem if the dogs got over-excited and didn’t stop their barking at the gate. If the dogs don’t stop barking very shortly after your arrival, the barking has become a problem, and needs correction.
  • Your dog uses its bark sometimes to say it wants to play.  Continued barking at their master for some attention can be seen as a form of bullying by the dog. I know because I used to be a sucker for this with my Lab, and she had me well trained to play ball with her whenever she wanted. Truthfully, this isn’t great, because it is up to you as top dog to determine when play time begins. Otherwise you are letting the dog be the boss of you, and that isn’t good for your ability to train him. If your dog is bulllying you, don’t let it, because it is important that you are always viewed as the boss in the relationship-not the other way around.

  So, you can see, all the above forms of barking are socially acceptable (when controlled)-whether because the barking stops very quickly when there is no reason for it, or because the dog is protecting you. But, except for these few, the majority of other reasons dogs bark too much should be corrected.

Now don’t be discouraged if this doesn’t work on the very first try. By doing these three simple steps whenever someone approaches your house or yard, your dog should soon pick up on when it’s time to stop barking.

Spending plenty of times around your dog, and giving them lots of attention when they are being quiet will help to prevent your dog from being bored, and thus developing a barking problem.

There are also a few other things you can try in addition to these steps. For example, you can use the squirt bottle filled with tap water along with the command “stop” or “enough” to help stop your dog from barking. One anecdotal report states that their dog would just keep on barking until the collar runs out of citronella. Then he wouldn’t have to bother about the smell anymore so he’d just keep on barking the whole day. Other dogs find other ways, like making a face (that probably gets them to hold their breath somehow) when the collar sprays and then barking again.

The third one is the shock collar. Now, this collar is the most controversial of the three. Whenever the dog barks, it shocks the dog with electricity. The strength level of the electric current can even be changed from 1 to 6; 6 being the highest and the one that stings the most.

Many people regard this collar as inhuman and condone it. After all, no sane person would do that to another person so why even think of doing it to their own pet? As much as possible, this kind of collar is avoided—and for good reason.

Even if collars seem to be the “promised land” out of your dog’s uncontrollable barking, collars are just merely supplements.

The best thing to do is to find out first why exactly your dog has that kind of habit. If humans have psychologists, dogs have veterinarian behaviorists. Their role is to generally observe a dog’s environment and circumstances to figure out what exactly triggers their socially unacceptable behavior. And then they use their findings to give training solutions to curb the annoying behavior.

Some reasons as to why a dog would bark are things like the lack of things to do (they might have too much time in their paws with nothing to spend it with) or frustration (perhaps they’re being bullied by another dog in the family or by the people around them) to name two.

You can always call a vet behaviorist to help you find out your dog’s behavior problems. He or she can also give you a solution. They might recommend you to get an anti-barking collar but only to support training.

Barking dogs are just sometimes extremely bored with so much energy to waste. Provide them with physical activities like walks, catch, and play time with other dogs. If you don’t have time, then hire a dog walker or take it to a doggie day care. Especially when you’re alone in the house, when you’re out, like humans, your dog feels lonely and bored and he will do anything to use all his energy.

You can also implement the “QUIET” command whenever he barks out of control. You wouldn’t have much trouble teaching the “QUIET” command if you’ve already established yourself as the alpha of the pack. If the barking is too much of a nuisance already, then a collar might work as a temporary solution BUT always follow it up with behavior training.

It is highly suggested that you stick to the sonar collar as it is perhaps the most humane choice of the three and also the most fool-proof one as much as anti-bark collars can get. Always follw-up anti-barking collars with proper obedience training. Training your dog to respond to obedience signals is still the best and lasting way to tone down incessant barking but still maintain his freedom to do what he naturally does.
