Immediatley take your puppies outside and let them use the bathroom after they have been in the crate for some time.When your pup uses the bathroom outside, make sure to begin praises it right at that moment.Your need at this time is to let your puppies learn that this is what you want them to do.

These can be a choking hazard to you puppies because they break apart real easy. One thing that you can do is to buy a kong and put some cream cheese, peanut butter, or puppy food inside. This will help your puppy adjust to the new crate and help to keep them quiet in the beginning stages of puppy crate training.

Buying a mat for the bottom of the crate is just to give your puppies a soft place to relax on while inside the crate. You might want to get something that is no bother to disinfect, and something that your puppy will not chew to pieces.

The odor nutralizer should be used to wipe up the area of carpet or flooring that your puppy went to the bathroom on. You shouldn’t assume that your pup will telepathically, just know what you want it to do when you put it outside.

Your puppies probably have the capacity to learn much more than you give them credit for, fast than you think if you educate yourself on proper training.   And I DO NOT mean waiting until it pees or poops on your rug and then rub it’s nose in it. You must not correct your puppies for using your carpet as a toilet unless you see it while it’s doing it.   Pups don’t have the mental capacity to realize what you are scolding them for that happened in the past, and you wind up confusing them. If you don’t see them in the act, you can’t punish your pup and think it will do any good.

Selecting A Crate

The first thing you want to do in puppy crate training is select the proper size crate. The kennel should be just large enough for your puppies to turn around and stand up in and no larger. You could have a preconceived notion that your puppies need more room to move around and play so they don’t feel confined. Thinking like a human again!  HERE’S WHAT TO DO TO TRAIN HIM TO GO IN HIS CRATE:

Put a cookie in your hand. Put the training collar and leash on your dog. Lead him to the crate and then tell him to sit. Once he sits, give him the command to get in the crate!” Toss the treat in the crate, and then pull forward on the leash, in the direction of the open crate. As he moves into the crate, he’ll automatically release the tension on the leash. Close the door to the crate, and tell him, “Good dog!” as he munches on the cookie.

Pretty cool huh? Okay, then what? Next, open the crate door and tell him, “Free!” When he comes out of the crate, rub him while you tell him what a good dog he is. Do this with your dog a good 4 or 5 times. After the fourth time, open the crate door, take the leash and training collar off, give him another cookie and close the crate door.

In 20 minutes, you can return and repeat this exercise. After you’ve done this a few times and see your dog start to ANTICIPATE the command, the next thing to do is only give him the cookie once every third time.

At this point, he’ll likely begin running into the crate before you even tell him to. Neat huh? Not Quite…. You’ll need to tell him, “No!” and pull him out of the crate. No praise. Remember–he can go in the crate on his own when you’re not standing next to him, but as this is a formal exercise, we want him to wait for the command.

This sounds confusing, and it is for the human mind. But it’s one of those things that your dog will understand naturally. Trust me–I know this from experience. After you’ve brought him out of the crate, he’ll start looking at you for the “Get in the crate” command. Give him the command. Reward him this time with the cookie.

You’ll start to see that he’ll begin looking to you… waiting for that magic command that allows him to dive into the crate and get your praise. (Note: If your dog is more motivated by a toy or something else (No, not the cat!!!) you can use whatever you want.

The idea is to use a motivator. The reason you want to pull forward on the leash instead of just throwing the food/ball/motivator into the crate is so that your dog learns that you are actually making him do it. This is the difference between using food as a motivator vs. using food as a bribe.
