There are many exceptional breeds that make wonderful hunting dogs, but not all are categorized solely as hunting dogs.  Case in point: hounds hunt undersized prey such as jackrabbits, and raccoons, animals that like to live in thickets.  However, not every hound hunts wholly by scent, as some make use of their well-developed vision too (sight hounds).

Gun dogs are one of the most well-known hunting dog categories.  Bear in mind, not all hunting dogs are meant to be gun dogs.  Hunters hunting with shotguns, in particular those on the hunt for birds, frequently use gun dogs.  They consist of retrievers, pointers, setters, and spaniels most of the time.   Additional categories of gun dogs include terriers and feists, who are famous for chasing animals into even underground dens.  Bigger hunting dogs like curs are frequently used to hunt bigger prey like, for example, mountain lions.

There is a broad range of breeds that are classified as gun dogs.  They are the best dogs to choose when you are seeking those to retrieve or even track down prey.  Each one has characteristic skills and some are similar in a few ways:

Retrievers

Not only are retrievers fantastic family pets, but they are also a first-rate option as hunting dogs.  They are first-rate swimmers and are fond of the water.  If you are aiming to hunt duck or other birds by the water, you should select a retriever, as he will have no difficulty seizing birds, whether on land or in the water.  Retrievers also learn the command “fetch” simpler than nearly all other dogs, as their innate instinct is to retrieve things.

Spaniels

A few spaniels enjoy water, but their ability lies in finding game that hides in thick cover.  They are like retrievers in that they then bring the game back to you.  Cocker spaniels are particularly good family pets, but also fantastic hunters.  English springer spaniels and cocker spaniels are two of the most common spaniel breeds used for hunting, although field spaniels are also growing in popularity.   Spaniels can be used to chase game out of hiding and retrieve it on land and water alike.

Pointers

Pointers, such as the German shorthaired pointer, are very good at discovering the prey for the hunter and point at it in a very distinct manner, giving them their names.  This breed will cover more ground than a spaniel, but are reliant on the hunter to flush out the animal first.

Setters

Setters, reminiscent of pointers, will discover and point at prey, but will also smell out the prey on command.  Setters, such as English setters, are talented at tracking upland birds.  However, as hunting dogs, they are generally used more in England and Ireland than in America.

Water Dogs

When we hear the word “poodle,” we often think of a lap dog with a convoluted hair-do.  However, the poodle is a sort of retriever that enjoys the water and is, in theory, a hunting dog.  Big traditional poodles are superior dogs to use for hunting when hunting close to the water.   Different from other hunting dogs, poodles have actual hair in place of fur and must be clipped every so often.  An odd aside: they are excellent hunting dogs for those with dog allergies.

The type of dog that is right for you depends mostly on what kind of prey you are hunting.  Plan for this ahead of time, so that when you go on your hunt you have the correct expectations of the dog. Recognizing what your dog is able to do will help out when you train him to be the most excellent hunting dog he knows how to be.

These days, dog training collars are more of a need than a luxury for dog owners who are responsible about their pets. As we all know, dog behavior needs to be at its best because there are laws that prohibit loud and long barking dogs, as well as neighbors that don’t appreciate them either. It’s not only loud and incessant barking that’s frowned upon in most places, but also threatening behavior that dogs may exhibit when faced with strangers or a crowd. Choker Training Collars

As soon as the dog eases on the pressure, the protrusions also lay flat back unto its normal angle.

Electric Collars

These collars work by delivering a small static electricity shock to dogs when they bark. There is a small device in this collar that detects vibrations in the dog’s throat caused by barking. Electronic training collars may be considered humane since the shock is actually as effective as a sharp spank. These collars work very well while the owner supervises the dog, and should be taken off the dog when not in training, to allow it to rest.

For those of you who are working on the best way to housebreak a puppy, barking can be tough. Whether you own a English Mastiff, a Sheepdog, or a Bischon, it can be challenging to get your dog to stop barking too much.  Different breeds are triggered by different things, from noises to movement.  Each breed seems to have its own nuisances for barking. Determining the reason your dog barks so much can be a key to learning to master out of control barking.

Some dog are just barkers.  It may seem like they live to bark.  Some people don’t mind a lot of dog barking, but it is annoying to many other people.  Try to remember that when dogs bark they are using vocal cues and signals to try to communicate with humans or other dogs.  Don’t try to stop your dog from barking completely, just try to narrow the barking down to when it is essential for their communication.  

If barking annoys you, don’t choose a dog breed that is known to bark a lot.  Because different dogs are bred for different reasons, some dogs are intended to bark more than others.  For example, dogs bred to be used as watch dogs or hunting dogs need to bark a lot.  Different dogs have different kinds of barks, from high pitched squeaking to low growls.  Learn about different breeds and their bard before you get a dog.  

Your dog may try to teach you to respond when she barks.  For example, she may drop a ball in your lap and expect you to jump up and come outside to play.  You can help control the barking by only getting up after she is quiet.  Train her to understand that you will not reward constant, unnecessary barking.  Consider this before you buy a citronella dog collar.  

When your dog starts to bark, give him a few seconds to get it out of his system.  If the barking persists clasp your hand firmly, but gently around your dog’s muzzle.  If the dog tries to escape your grasp and continue barking reach out with your other hand and hold her by the collar.  

Hopefully, you can figure out why your dog barks non-stop.  Sometimes, it is too difficult to figure out and you may need some outside help to stop annoying barking behavior.  A barking problem can be helped, with assistance I was able to stop my two dogs from barking at every little noise or movement.

One of the best leadership skills any dog owner can do for their dog is to go on a Power Walk.  Yes, you read that correctly.  People go on power walks but you need to take your dog for a brisk walk that you are in charge. 

This means that your dog needs to pay attention to you and you do not stop to smell the litter on the ground or let him smell that rabbit that just crossed the road.It is not cruel but you are telling the dog you are the leader and have to stand your ground.

After your first session it will get easier but the very first one will be the most difficult.

Put your Dogtra 175NCP electronic training collar on your dog and set the level to between 5 and 20 depending on the temperament of your dog.Some dogs need a light stimulation so turn the dial downt o 5.  If he does not feelt he sensation then move up slightly.

Put the leash onto the electronic collar strap.

You will find that you are dancing when you start because you keep going in circles.  Whichever way your dog is initially going you are going to go in the opposite direction.

The initial time you try this may be disaster but you need to be persistent and don't give up.

Put the end of leash and the control in the same hand.This means your right hand unless your are left handed. 

As you start your walk your dog will want to go in his direction which is usually in the direction you are going but he will want to lead and pull you so as you start walking and you dog gets in front of you, immediately turn and walk in the other direction and press the “nick” button on the collar and let the dog get a tug from the leash end.  DO NOT stop walking.

Your dog will probably run back toward you and again run out in front, so you will turn again quickly in the opposite direction while pressing your "nick" or constant button and continue walking.

If your Dogtra 175 NCP is not set high enough because your dog feels nothing turn up the control slightly.  If it is too high, turn it down.Try using the vibrating sensation first as many dogs are sensitive enough to be trained with that button.

If your dog is not paying attention to you then change directions and give a tap of the button.  You don't always have to turn in the opposite direction.  You can turn to your right or left.Leaders get in the path of other pack members so you have to step toward him and continue walking so that he has to get out of your way.

Just hold the leash next to your waist and the dog training collar does the correction work.

No words are needed.The top dog in the wild goes forward and does not wait and others must follow or get lost or left out.  He keeps walking and if you don't keep up you are left behind.

Obedience training does not have to be long and boring, a 10 minute session is better than 30 minutes.  As your dog learns to walk with you you will find that you don’t need to give corrections with the collar but keep the Dogtra training collar on your dog for reinforcement in the event your dog decides he sees a squirrel or something that he thinks is more important than listening to you.

The owner has trained their dog to not respond to his commands to come.Multiple reasons for this occurance happen and can easily be avoided.  Mainly people will punish their dog when he finally comes to his owner and, therefore, the dog will resist coming because he knows he has been punished in the past.Your dog may not come to you because his fun is coming to an end.

I teach the command “come” using the Dogtra 200NCP Training Collar and a long line.  The long line can just be a simple $1 clothes line you purchase as the dollar store.At a camping store you can find nylon webing about 1/2 in wide that can be used for this purpose.    You will want it to be lt least 25 to 30 foot long because you want to be able to work at distances with your dog as your training progresses.

You should have already started training the come command with a 6 ft leash and asked him to come toward you while giving direction.  When your dog started coming toward you, you gave lots of praise because you want that to be the most wonderful thing is to want to come to you and when he reached you asked him to sit and wait for a pat on the head.

Doing this step first will make it easier so your dog will not know if he has on a 6ft leash or a longer leash.  Why?Dogs are knows to not use reason or logic.Don't make the mistake of trying to use the long leash as a long version of the short one because he will learn there is a difference.

The first step to teaching this training is to begin taking your dog to various different locations (without other dogs) and let him run around with the Dogtra 200NCP Training Collar on and the long line attached to the collar and let him run a bit with the long line trailing him.  Make sure you are close to the end of the long line at any time to step on it and stop him.If your dog is a runner you will want to start in a secure location.

If you have always kept your dog on a short leash and not allow him some freedom will make him want to run away.  So, the second he thinks he is free from the leash or fenced in area will bolt and run away because he has learned that the free area is not available very often so he must take advantage of it.

Now for the Training:

You need to have your transmitter for your collar in one hand and be ready to step on the long line with your foot and grab the long line with your other hand so stay close. 

Once you begin letting your dog roam around with that long leash attached two things will begin to happen.  The first is that your dog will forget he is trailing the long lone so he starts to learn he is free, and freedom STOPS become so scarce because he is with you and not kept on a tight leash.  Second, if he decides to "take a hike" you will always be in a position to regain his control.Your foot should be ready to step on the leash to stop your dog, electronic device in hand and pick up the leash end.It will be impossible for your dog to get away from you even if he is fast. 

Now that he has run a bit you want him to come back.Using a level of not more than 20 press the button, say come, pick up the end of the leash and turn and run two steps.  All these things are done simultaneously. 

So make sure there is not a lot of slack in the long line between you and your dog so that as soon as you command and turn and run and press your stimulation button it happens at the same time.

The dog just got a little buzz and will not know it came from you.  If he moves even a little toward you or looks at you call him happily to you. 

If he does not repeat the same process, holding the end of the line, turn and take a few running steps so you get a pop on his end while at the same time commanding “come” and pressing the button.Be happy if he takes a step to you. You are encouraging to him that the most wonderful thing in the world is to come to his owner.

Train at least 10 times in a row while your dog is not looking at you.

Some people are willing to invest a lot of money and time.

Of course you can purchase the more expensive dog collars if you want to. However, you will find there are a great deal of choices for you to choose from that do not cost as much. However, since it is tagged with a low price the buyer might immediately conclude that it does not perform well.

Remember, we were made to believe that price equals quality.
