There are many dog training methods available today. One very popular technique is the “clicker training” method.

This system uses a clicker, a small plastic box with a metal button which makes a clicking sound when pressed. This has become one of the chosen methods used by trainers because it parallels the Positive Dog Training method.

This technique reinforces natural occurring behaviors on dogs, such as sitting, standing, barking, etc. It is also used to teach new tricks to your dog, such as play dead, roll over, high five, etc.

The assumption behind this system is that the noise given off by the clicker means accurate. As soon as the dog performs the command accurately, you use the clicker followed by positive reinforcement and lots of praise. This makes it clear to the dog that the behavior is correct.

Timing and consistency are two critical factors to make this technique work. Make sure the clicking signal is given as soon as the command is finished correctly. If this is performed at the same time every time, the dog will make the association between the command, and the fact that he did it correctly.

Once the dog starts making the connection between the clicker and the “right behavior” signal, it will learn new commands faster and easier.

Dogs are very smart, and they prefer training that reinforces the positive aspects instead of the negative. Old school used negative methods, such as hitting, yelling or spanking to correct bad behavior. Studies have shown that this type of negative training does not work, and can cause secondary unwanted behaviors.

As with any type of training, consistency and patience are essential. At first it will take longer to train the dog, but as time goes on the dog starts understanding the method and training will be easier and faster.

Clicker training is relatively easy, and can be a lot of fun for you and your dog. Get yourself a clicker and start experimenting.

Having a well trained dog is one of the most wonderful experiences you can have with your pet. The problem is that with all the techniques available, how do you know which one is the best one for your dog? In this article I will be explaining one of the most popular techniques available today: Positive Dog Training.

Positive dog training is a training method that focuses on praising and positive reinforcement every time the dog performs the task correctly. In other words, you only reward the dog for good behavior. Studies have shown that most dogs respond better to this tactic.

This tactic does not involve hitting, spanking, or punishing a dog when a task or command is not performed to your satisfaction. This is considered a “negative” approach, and it has been found to work unsuccessfully with dogs in general.

There are many types of rewards you can use with your dog, such as doggie treats, kind words, a quick rub, a pat on the head, etc. Studies have shown that dogs respond better to this type of training using positive reinforcement.

For example let’s look at the “sit” command. After you ask the dog to sit and he sits, immediately follow up with a treat and praise. Do this every single time so that the dog makes the association between sitting and praise (positive reinforcement).

Another instance in which this technique can be very helpful is during potty training. Use the same approach as described in the paragraph above every time the dog goes to the bathroom when and where they are supposed to. Soon enough the dog will make the connection between the reward and going to the bathroom where he or she is supposed to. Training the dog this way will speed up the potty training process.

Another important aspect of this training involves the tone of your voice. When giving a order, your tone of voice must be firm and with authority. Don’t scream, yell, or use a high-pitched tone of voice. Be firm so the dog knows you mean business. When praising the dog use a happy and pleasant voice. Dogs love to be praised and rewarded, and they can tell from the tone of your voice.

One of the most frustrating parts of animal ownership is making sure they develop good habits when it comes to when and where they eliminate. Indeed, training a dog to wait until it can be taken out can be one of the most difficult training tasks, requiring firmness and consistency when offering either praise or punishment.

House breaking a dog is much more about having a routine and training the owner than teaching the dog anything. It is important that the dog is taken outside several times a day. Early in the morning and right before bed are both good places to start. Other times to take or send the dog outside include after meals and after playtime.

At least at first, you’ll want to stay outside and make sure that the dog does go. Then, the owner should tell the dog how they well they did that using whatever word they want to dog to associate with elimination.

Dogs do not like to eliminate where they eat or sleep. This fact can be taken advantage of if the owner places a small bowl of food in any area of the house where the dog has had an accident in the past. Dogs are creatures of habits and instincts, so hopefully the instinct not to eliminate near food will override the habit of eliminating in the area.

If you continue to have problems, consider limiting your dog’s access to the majority of your house. Often owners find they have to block off the second floor of a home or the hallway leading to the bedrooms of the house. Rooms that are too far from a dogs regular living space feel no different that outdoors to him.

Remember, consistency is key when you’re hoping to house train your dog.

Young dogs should begin training at an early age to help develop good behaviors, but even older dogs can learn to avoid bad habits. Before training starts it is best to research the dog’s breed(s) to get an idea of its personality ingrained traits or any specific quarks the breed(s) may have when it comes to training.

Humane training is a necessity if you want to maintain a good relationship with your dog. This means that during the training phase you reward good behaviors and ignore and/or correct bad ones. Strong physical reprimands and devices such as choke chains can cause much more harm than good in the long run. Repeated use of physical force can cause a dog to become extremely skittish around all people and afraid of its master. Humane corrections include using a stern voice, withholding rewards or physically moving the dog where it should go without hurting it.

Common commands such as sit, heel, stay, and come are generally easiest to teach through reward-based training early in life. This early learning can be important, since otherwise a dog might develop bad habits that will be significantly harder to unlearn later on. A dog with a strongly developed sense of independence is less likely to learn since he’s become used to getting his own way too often. When possible, teach your dog basic commands early to avoid this sort of problem in the future.

Remember, your dog does want to please you. With a little patience and a lot of consistency, it’s not that hard to teach dogs what behaviors you like and what definitely isn’t allowed. Retain a position of confident leadership and you shouldn’t have any problem having a happy, well-adjusted dog as a result.

Training your dog to come as soon as it is called

Instructing a four-legged friend to come every time it’s called is a really imperative, and likely life saving, part of some successful k9 training system. All properly trained dogs should learn to respond straight away to your owner’s voice, and also the quicker this lesson is learned your better.

The advantages of training your puppy to come anytime called are understandable. Firstly, coming when called will assist you regain control of the dog in case of collar break, snapped leash or other similar equipment failure. That is particularly important when you are out with your pet, especially in an area with lots of traffic. It can be vital that the pet respond to your voice and return to your side, even in the absence of collar and leash, and even though there are lots of other activities competing for its attention.

Coming while called can also be a crucial skill for all working canine friend. Whether your dog’s job is herding sheep, guarding livestock, or sniffing out bombs and drugs at the airport, the working pet must be under total control at all times, whether on leash or off.

Regardless of whether your dog’s sole job is being a loyal companion, it can be still vital that he learn this important basic obedience exercise. After your first obedience lessons, such as heeling, stopping on command, sitting on command, etc. have been learned, this is time to start incorporating your come anytime called lessons into your daily training sessions.

One note about k9 training – it’s all too easy for training sessions to become dull and routine for both handler and k9. A bored canine friend will not be receptive to learning, just as a bored handler will not be a good teacher. This is important, therefore, to always incorporate fun things and play into each and every training session. Incorporating a few minutes of play time before the lesson begins can do wonders for the attitude of four-legged friend and human alike. Likewise, ending each training session having a few minutes of free play time is a great way to end on a positive note and to help the dog associate obedience training with fun and not drudgery.

Your command to stay and the command to come when called are often combined in obedience training lessons, and they do go naturally together. Start with the dog on a loose leash, ask the four-legged friend to sit and then slowly back away. If the pet begins to get up and follow you, return to the four-legged friend and ask him to sit again. Continue this process until you can reach your end of your leash without your four-legged friend getting up.

After you can successfully reach the end of your leash on a consistent basis, try dropping the leash altogether. Of course you will want to do this in a controlled environment like a fenced in yard. After your k9 has mastered your stay command, it will be time to add your come as soon as called command.

Take up the leash again, and with your pet on the end of your leash, say “come” or “come here”. It will be often helpful to use a lure anytime instructing this behavior. Your lure provides a visible item for your canine friend to focus on. Educating the dog to come to the lure is a good first step in training the four-legged friend to come when called.

Repeat this procedure many times until your canine friend will consistently stay and then come when called. After your k9 has mastered coming anytime called while attached to the leash, slowly start introducing the concept anytime the leash is removed. As before, these training sessions must only take place in a controlled, safe environment, such as a fenced in front or back yard.

A rightly taught, obedient dog ought to respond to your call to return to its owner no matter where this is and no matter what distractions may occur. It is therefore necessary to test the dog with distractions of your own.

If you have a neighbor, if at all possible one that has a dog of their own, try having her come over with your dog. Have him, and your dog, stand just outside the fenced in area and repeat the come whilst called exercise with the animal off leash. If he becomes distracted by the other dog, put the leash back on and repeat the process. The goal is to have your dog consistently pay attention to your commands, whatever distractions may well present themselves.

Aggression in a dog is something that no owner should allow to continue and as soon as the problem arises, needs to be dealt with through the right sort of corrective training. But in order for an owner to find the right sort of dog aggression training to help solve the problem they first need to understand a little about the types of aggression a dog may suffer from.

In this article, we take a look at just what these are. It is important to remember that a dog may not only show just one type of aggression in fact they could show several.

1. Dominance – This is where the dog you own thinks that they are in fact the alpha member of the group and will assert themselves more, especially against those they consider to be predators. This type of aggression is often found in male dogs and certain breeds. In order for you as the owner to bring this particular problem under control you will need to quickly establish who is pack leader (you).

2. Fear – This type of aggression will manifest in your dog when they feel either insecure or frightened by something that they are unsure of. For some dogs, their aggression may manifest when they hear a noise or when they are being approached by someone or something that they feel uncomfortable with. Generally, they will either bark, growl, bare their teeth or snap at what is causing them discomfort. But if left unchecked and the problem allowed to continue, it could result in the animal actually biting someone or attacking another animal.

3. Over Protective/Territorial – A dog who suffers from this form of aggressive behavior is actually a danger to anyone who they come into contact with. Along with feeling territorial about the place in which they leave, this if left to continue will also become an issue for dog and owner when they are away from the home as well.

4. Possessive – A dog may react lovingly towards you one moment, and then the next could be baring their teeth and growling at you. Often this will occur when the dog feels threatened and that you are likely to take away from them something that they have. This problem can often occur in dogs at feeding time; especially when they are young and they are having to fight with their brothers and sisters to get food. If you find your dog reacting in such a way to any toy or their food you need to immediately start working on ways to control it.

5. Punishment – This type of aggression normally occurs in a dog where they have been incorrectly punished or their owner is trying to exert their dominance of the animal. Although they may not respond aggressively, in the beginning to such treatment over any period of time, things will change and sooner or later, they are going to turn and become aggressive.

Above we have looked at just a few of the types of aggression, which a dog may suffer from. Only once you are able to identify just what type of aggressive behaviour it is your dog suffers from, can you then find the right kind of dog aggression training for them. A quick search of the internet and you are going to be able to quite easily find the right kind of training for both you and your dog.

There are some occasions where it is expected or possibly even helpful for your dog to bark, such as an uninvited intruder in your home. However, a dog’s bark can quickly change from being helpful to just being stressful or bothersome. Especially troublesome for owners who live in an apartment or condominium building and have been the unfortunate recipient of neighbor complaints. Fortunately, it isn’t too hard to get a dog to stop barking with proper training.

First off it’s important to realize that many dog’s barking stems from his boredom. Proper exercise can cut down on barking. If a dog isn’t getting any attention, barking sometimes seems to be his way of getting your attention – even if it’s negative attention. Ensuring that your dog has been properly exercised is a good first step toward stopping their unfortunate barking problems.

The last thing you want to do when teaching a dog not to bark is give him positive reinforcement. When chastising a dog, address it in a clear, authoritative voice, and after you’ve made it clear they’re doing something wrong, don’t go on to give him or her positive attention. Another tactic is similar to this by immediately addressing the dog, but don’t say anything, simply spray a bit of water on the dog – this may have to be repeated before the dog gets the point. Behavior training is always helpful when owning a dog and this issue can be addressed in class.

Anti-barking products can also help break your dog of their bad barking habits. These products include: electronic collars, citronella collars, sound-emitting collars, remote sound-emitters, muzzles, debarking surgery, and medication. These items, except for surgery, can be used temporarily while training is still in the process. Finally, you might pursue professional help – many trainers and kennels offer late night training sessions, which would let the owner and pet both come to understand how to solve the problem.

Taylor writes on a variety of other subjects, including how to select an xlarge dog bed.
