I’ve never understood how people or horses can stand doing the same ole repetitive riding routine day in and day out. Doesn’t riding around and around in the same ole ring get boring? I’ll admit, I too used to be guilty of this, but that’s before I realized that there is a wide world of riding opportunities and challenges out there to enjoy and take advantage of outside the realm of “the riding ring!”

I guess for some, it’s easy to fall into the comfort zone rut of ring riding, but a well-rounded horse and rider, should be able to handle a variety of riding environments. I’ve seen fantastic “show hunters” perform on the buckle in a ring, yet outside of their “training bubble” fall to pieces when presented with the challenge of working in a wide open field alone or with others. I’ve witnessed great hackers, crumble when presented the challenge of true collection and hind quarter engagement in a dressage ring. Have you ever caught yourself asking the following?

“Uh oh, what’s gonna happen when that tractor passes, or that dog runs past us, or that cow in the field next door walks by, or the donkey or miniature from the barn across the way walks past, or heaven forbid…. a horse or pony carriage passes by?”

Economic Constraints

Aside from illness and disease, many horses are put down for financial reasons, such as:

• Competitive Horses. Many horses are bred and raised for competitions (e.g. racing), with the vast majority of these not making the grade. The ones which are not fast enough are often either put down, or sold for slaughter, or sold into questionable circumstances.
• Elderly Horses. Older horses, having reached the end of their productive life (e.g. riding), leave the owner with a decision between puting the horse down or paying for an expensive (and potentially lengthy) retirement.
• Medical Costs. Injuries and illnesses can be very expensive. For example, a severe case of colic which requires surgery can cost 000, with no guarantee that the treatment will be successful. With the average horse costing 00 or less (in many cases, much less), horse owners of limited financial resources face a difficult decision.

Although the economic pressures are real, there are alternatives:

• Rescue Organisations. There are numerous horse rescue organisations, which will find new homes for horses young and old. Some of them will even take on medical costs. Your local veterinarian is a good source to ask, not only for the large organisations but also for the smaller ones and the local private activities.
• New Owners. Although a horse may have no apparent economic value,  there may still be many potential alternative owners that would be happy to provide it a new home. For example, people which have purchased a horse for their private use recognise that they need a second horse as a companion to the first. For this purpose, even an old or unusable horse may be perfectly suitable. There are a number of websites where one can advertise horses for this and similar purposes, often free of charge.

One may not always be able to find a solution for every horse. However, before putting down a horse which is still enjoying its life, remember that there are alternatives.

The flight instinct is the predominant natural horse instinct. So the trick to a good well-rounded horse is to get them to overcome this flight instinct and use their “thinking mind.” Using the thinking side of the brain is not a natural response, but it’s something a horse can develop and enhance. Horses develop this side of their brain by being challenged with new stimuli and tasks. Why not take your hunter out on trail rides… and laugh at those weenies who snub their noses at trail riding as being “not real work” They are usually the one’s most in need of a good trail ride; bock, bock BOOOOCKKK! Status

Like most other turtles, the Red Eared Slider Turtle has been named by the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. However, it is at lower risk of extinction than the Olive Ridley species of turtle that is highly endangered.

Availability

You can find them in online stores, at reptile shows, and pet stores. They are very common and popular. You will need a proper and suitable setup to provide the turtle with a natural habitat where it can survive. That can set you back by quite a few hundred dollars, but the breed itself is extremely inexpensive.

Farm subsidies began in 1933 as part of FDR’s Agricultural Adjustment Act. However, well before and long after farmers, ranchers, and landowners have often asked: How can my land make money? If the land in question is suitable for camping, landowners can market these attributes as well.

Many rare and unusual breeds of farm animals possess qualities of great value other than shoveling the fattest, cheapest chunk of meat onto someone’s plate. These are large, meaty birds that are “very cold-weather hardy.” I know from personal experience that white chickens die like flies in the cold. There are a number of farmers who do keep these rare breeds from an altruistic view, some work as non-profits. I applaud their efforts. But I am convinced that a simple and good life is a life of profit and increase. The more that a farmer profits from the valuable characteristics of rare and unusual breeds – on a small, simple-life scale, the greater the chance that many of these wonderful breeds of farm animals can be preserved

Geckos eat the following diet:

You must supplement a the diet to insure the best optimal health. This is usually done with a vitamin powder that the food is dusted with.

Habitat:

Geckos live in many different warm climates around their home. Where a gecko originates from usually dictates its habitat when kept in captivity.

Geckos can be kept easily as pets and make a beautiful addition to a lizard collection. The best option is a captive bread specimen. The price ranges from $20 to as high as $3000. Sizes range from 3-4 inches for a new hatchling, and right up to 12 inches for some of the giants. The typical size of most adults geckos is 8 inches. The lifespan of a gecko can be as long as 20 years or more in captivity. The type of care is deterministic of these long life spans. A happy gecko is a long lived one.

Once the decision to keep a gecko has been made, getting basic information about how to house and care for it is essential to make sure it is a good experience for the gecko and its keeper.

Once you have acquired your pet, created its housing, set up its nutritional needs, and let it settle in, it is time to get acquainted. So in general, try not to handle your gecko on a regular basis until they settle in for a few days and are at least 6 inches in length.

A final note about gecko care, when your pet lizard is big enough, it is best to sit on the floor, and let your gecko crawl around through loose fingers hand-over-hand for 10 to 15 minutes per day until accustomed to the touch. This process takes around seven days. Never, ever grab the gecko’s tail, or it might be dropped. though quite often it can regenerate in less than 45 days
