‘Down Dog!’

This lesson is best taught outside, in a open area your dog trusts, free from ALL distractions. An empty park, or your back yard is pretty much ideal.

Start by getting your dogs attention and attendance with a preferred reward (diced up meat, cheese or sausage perhaps). The idea is to get the dog to be positioned standing in front of you.. Now hold a little reward out in fron of his nose, and then place it towards the ground out in front of him. Keep it far enough away that he knows he cant hoave it yet though. Hold the dog back if you have to. Use your chosen down command (voice and hand motion) and repeat it until he lays down.

After he lies down, let him have his treat by moving it to him, as he is lying down.

Its best to not let him get the treat, until your dog has completely done the down part. Never offer the treat to him if the job is half done. If your dog doesnt want to go down, persuade him gently by pushing on his back, then treat him when hes down fully. Keep doing this until he learns he gets the treat when he is fully laid down. I can tell you it wont take long, if hes hungry, as dogs are!

When your dog can lie down well, next hold the food a couple of inches off the ground infront of him. What we hope is he will lie down in anticipation of the reward!

This may confuse him initially, but again motion him with guidance, and reward on the down motion. 

After practise of this, start giving the ‘down’ command (hand motion and voice instruction) before you present the treat to lead the dog down.

Slowly now try and reduce the dogs need for the treat for a reward, so that he respons more to the hand motion and command. Hold the treat further and further away from him, and praise him more and pat him each time he lys down, placing less focus on giving the treat. Now get him to accept your praise as reward for listening to the hand and voice command.
