pets – A Word of Caution Regarding Pet Grooming Services
Any cat or dog owner will tell you how important grooming is in the life of their pet. Whether this is a chore they choose to do by themselves at home, or use the services of a pet grooming professional. If you take your dog to a pet grooming expert, be careful who you take them to. There are plenty of horror stories out there that will make any responsible pet owner shutter. You must know and trust your pet groomer or disastrous results may occur. This article is a helpful guide to watching for red flags when you visit your local pet grooming expert whether you have used them for a long time or it is a first time visit.
Hamsters are very cute, easy to care for and won’t cost you much money. Aside from the hamster’s cage you will only need to buy a bit of bedding and some food for your pet but how much can an animal that weighs only a few ounces eat?
Intestinal Blockages: Ferrets love to chew on anything they can find. This, in itself, can be quite entertaining unless a piece of plastic, material, rubber, or sponge is swallowed. Any foreign object can become trapped in the intestines, which will interfere with digestion and defecation. Often, older ferrets will develop hairballs that can lead to the same condition. In the case of an intestinal blockage, your ferret will show the following signs: loss of appetite, diarrhea, vomiting, and lethargy. An intestinal blockage usually has to be removed by surgery.
If they are abrasive in either manner or speech, you might want to redirect your business. If they are not conscious of their negative approach to your pet while you are there, think about how more negative are harmful the pet grooming professional will be if you are not there.
Hypoglycemia (Insulinoma): This condition afflicts ferrets usually after they are 2 years old. An insulinoma is a tumor located in the pancreas. As it grows, it causes the pancreas to produce an excess of insulin, which, in turn, causes the blood sugar level to drop. If this happens, your ferret will seem lethargic and sleep more than usual. You may notice the hind legs grow weak and that your ferret is producing an abundance of saliva. If untreated, your ferret can slip into a coma and die. This condition is usually treated with corticosteroids.
Adrenal Disease: This condition occurs when the adrenal glands begin to grow at an excessive rate and excrete too much hormone. Your ferret will start to lose its hair and scratch a lot. If you own a female ferret, you may notice that her vulva will become swollen. This can affect ferrets around 2 to 3 years of age. In order to correct this condition, surgery is usually required.
Aleutian Disease (Parvovirus): This is a very serious disease that affects the nervous system, liver, bladder, and kidneys. A ferret can be afflicted for 12 to 24 months without displaying any symptoms. When the symptoms do show up, they are very distinct. You will see tremors in your ferret’s head, weakness in the hind legs, extreme listlessness, and less frequent urination and defecation.
All pets can be susceptible to illnesses and diseases. By managing your ferrets diet and hygiene, regularly monitoring its health, and watching out for any signs of distress or sickness, you will have a good chance of keeping your ferret healthy. Of course, no amount of prevention can prevent all illnesses, and so, at the first sign of illness, always check with your veterinarian.

Feel Good About Your Cat Food Choice – Organic Cat Food
If you are one of those individuals that is tired of constantly having to clean out their cat’s litter box, then you should consider toilet training your cat. While this may sound as a shock to many, cat training has become a very popular subject as of recent for many owners looking to keep their homes clean, save money on and reduce pollution.
1. Holistic approach to cat health
You need to look at all aspects of your cat’s health and not just one complaint in isolation. If your cat is stressed out, eating badly and not getting any exercise, then it is more likely to get sick. Happy, active cats with good diets are far less likely to get sick.
The next step is to get your cat to associate the bathroom with its kitty litter box. Try moving it in the bathroom and showing your cat it’s new location. If she has no problem with the adjustment then great. If she does the move the box gradually closer to the bathroom. Once there have the litter box next to the toilet. Once you cat becomes accustomed to the new location of the box, the next step would be to raise its height. This can be done by placing a small supporter below the box to give it some altitude. This raising needs to be done at a very slow pace as not all cats will adjust to height; hence, it is best advised to do this at a very slow rate.
Once the height is adjusted and as it gradually makes up to the height of the toilet, the next step is to get your cat to use the toilet instead of the litter box. The best approach towards doing this is by purchasing a metal bowl that fits onto the toilet and which can accommodate the kitty litter box as well. As your cat will gradually begin to use the litter box, she may start out by using the litter box as a support for its back legs.
4. Keep to regular dosing
When your cat is taking herbal supplements it’s vital that you keep the dosing regular. It takes a little while for herbal treatments to take effect, so don’t expect immediate results. Depending on the goal, it can take a few days or weeks for the benefits to be realised.
5. Don’t be afraid to use the vet in case of emergencies
You cannot rely on herbal treatments for absolutely every single potential health problem that your cat might endure. There is a time for herbal treatment for cat health and there is a time for taking kitty to the vet. One does not exclude the other, so use your common sense to pick the appropriate course of action.
I hope that these hints help you get the most out of herbal treatment for cat health. It’s important to ensure that you have a proactive approach to keeping kitty healthy. For example, do you have a plan for how you are going to avoid her getting fleas? What are you doing to ensure her digestive health? A healthy cat is a happy cat

Everything You Need to Know – Discus Fish Food
Keeping Siamese fighting fish is a very rewarding hobby. They each have a unique personality. Also, they are known for their feisty behavior, their long fins, and bright colors. After keeping these fish for an amount of time, many people decide to try their hand at breeding them for fun. This can be a bit daunting as they require some preparation and certain parameters before they will spawn with ease for their owners. Knowing how to set up the spawning tank is an important step when one is just learning to breed betta fish.
You have probably spent a fair deal of money on getting your tank set up and buying your discus fish if you have got them already. If you have not, you have possibly at least looked at the costs related to this entertainment and notice you need the best for your discus fish to be satisfied and healthy.
Next you have the compact fluorescent light. This can be used in tanks that contain upward of 55 gallons or more. You can safely add plants when you use this type of lighting.
The third choice is the VHO or Very High Output. This freshwater aquarium lighting is suitable for tanks that contain 100 gallons or more. If you want to have plants then this type of lighting is suitable for them.
There are four criteria to consider regarding lighting for a freshwater aquarium:
- The number of lumens per watt
- Lumens per watt
- PAR and
- Watts
As a basic rule of thumb here is a general overview of which lighting is suitable for various conditions:
- The recommended lighting for fish-only aquariums: Standard or power compact fluorescent systems. These use a minimum of 2-3 watts per every gallon of tank water.
- For freshwater planted aquariums: Standard fluorescent, T-5HO, power compact and metal halide/HQI. These take a minimum of 4 watts per gallon; a higher ratio is best.
- For marine reef aquariums: T-5 HO, VHO, Power Compact, Metal Halide/HQI. Reef tanks require a minimum of 4-6 watts per gallon and if your tank contains Coral, Anemones or Clams then increase it to 8-12 or more watts per gallon
It is important that you know which Kelvin Rating to make use of:
- For fish you will need 5,500K to 20,000K depending on the species. Deeper tanks will require actinics.
- For plants you will need 6,500K to 18,000K.
- For reefs you will need 9,000K to 20,000K with actinics.
This will appear like a pain, but after you have made it once, it is a breeze to do and with this recipe, it will make enough to last you for months. The additional benefits will be recognized in the behavior and vitality of your fish.
Adult discus fish should be fed twice every day while baby fish are always hungry and can be fed up to 3 times a day. There are far more things that fish will eat, and you want to actually give them some variety in their diet. For example, you can feed them bloodworms from time to time, or simply cut up salt water shrimp. Feeding them one kind of food all the time could cause deficiencies that will finish up in poor growth and their becoming subject to sickness.
Making your own fish food and maintaining some of the tips that have been given to you here should steer you to having content and healthy fish for ages to come

How to Keep Them Happy and Healthy – Parakeets Care
Lovebird’s care isn’t a simple achievement. You must keep in mind the things they require, to keep them healthy and in good condition. They deserve to be supplied with correct nourishment, with the most healthy foods, cages, toys, and allocated special time to bond with their owner.
They adore interaction for they’re socially active creatures. Without social interaction either with a human or another Lovebird, or not having diversions, Lovebirds can be bored and stressed that might result to a behavior problem. Certainly, you as a Lovebird owner do not want that. This makes an important addition to your Lovebirds care list.
They also eat, full cereals and whole grains for example, barley, oats, multigrain, and full rice, also, sprouts, weeds, seeds like sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, beans, watch out with lima and navy beans for they also, are lethal. Pellets that created for lovebirds is a good healthy addition. You may want to add that to your list. Also other low-fat, healthy food that we eat can be given to the Lovebirds. Remember though that Lovebirds can be overweight and have lipomas which is a fatty growth.
Lovebirds love fruits except avocados, don’t give them those for they’re deadly – add this to your Lovebird’s care list. Just ensure you have washed it from the insecticides and pesticides utilized by plant growers. Another addition in your Lovebirds care list – remove all uneaten fresh foods from your Lovebirds cage before they’re ruined.
Another addition to your Lovebird’s care list is that you want to supply a dish of water for your Lovebirds, they’re dependent to water, and they adore to wash. This also, helps keep their feathers in good shape. You must also take into account, the weather, Lovebirds shouldn’t be exposed to freezing conditions (add to your Lovebird’s care list).
One of the most major things in the bird’s health is to be aware of the likely behavior issues that may happen to your bird, they should not get bored or stressed. They need ongoing interaction, and without these diversions they’d resort in hurting themselves for example they may start plucking off their feathers (one type of behavioural problem you may face). Also make certain that the Lovebird you are keeping is bred in captivity, it is not good for wild Lovebirds to be put in a little cage where they can’t fly, this could cause them to become stressed and they could possibly sadly die.
A parakeets care is largely down to you, the pet owner. Because birds wish to fly forward instead of up, try to get a cage that’s wider more than taller. The wider the cage is, the more relaxed space there’ll be for your pet to enjoy flying. Horizontal bars on the cage as the parakeets like to climb and the horizontal bars are loads more comfy to try this on.
Ensure that the cage is massive enough the birds head does not touch the top, its tail doesn’t touch the bottom or sides, and that there’s sufficient space for random activity to happen.
Last but in not least, ABSOLUTELY confirm there is not any LEAD in the cage. Lead is very deadly to birds, and can be lethal. These things are all vital when providing your parakeets care program, and there are masses of other stuff to think about too. Check out book stores, and web sites for more detailed clarifications of caring for your new pet

Preparations to Maintain a Healthy Pet – Sugar Glider Health
Are you at the end of your tether (Yours not your Ferret’s)? Is your ferret on its last warning?
It doesn’t have to be that way. Many ill-informed people believe the ferret is a nasty, smelly animal which will pee everywhere and bite everyone. This could not be further from the truth. With the right guidance a ferret can be trained as well as any other animal, if not better.
Sorts of insects could also be included on their diet. On their natural habitat, sugar glider eat varieties of fruits and also insects, dont deny the chance to feed them with insects while they are been domesticated. Feeding them with insects is like to be done often not every day.
Sugar glider can easily increase their weight because they cannot move more freely when they are been confined. Lack of movement of female sugar glider can cause impairment of vision or even blindness to their newborn young’s because of the fatty deposits on their eyes.
Deficiency from calcium
Low calcium diet can lead to paralysis of back leg and could be fatal. So, to prevent this problem from coming, use a tiny vitamins and supplements for a source of calcium. Feed you pet with well-balanced as well as nutritional diets, you can ask your vet on how to make a very good diet plan for your pet. Also, monitoring its food consumption and change something different whenever the sugar glider does not care for the foods that you are offering.
Sugar gliders have different personalities and tastes on their foods. Finding the right food for them can be difficult and needs time. Searching for the right food is time consuming, but if the owner finally found the right food that fit their appetite, they can be easily to feed. Foods that are found on the local market such as frozen mixed fruits and vegetables can help on their diet; this is one thing that an owner should remember so that they can easily feed the animal. On the other hand, Fresh water should be also put on its diet plan, and should be consumed everyday. Also, always remember that the best water for the animal is fresh water, tap water cannot be the best because it has chemical content that makes the water clean.
Also, having the sugar glider diet plan generally depends on your pets. If the pet is still hungry when morning time comes, feed it with just a small amount and a little more on the evening. Owners could also try to mix its foods so that they could enjoy it often

How You Can Stop it and Get Your Best Friend Back – Aggressive Dog Behavior
An in depth look at aggressive dog behavior will demonstrate that it makes for a stressful situation at home as well as outside. An aggressive dog is not easy to control, and sometimes runs the household.
Many people become intimidated by their dogs, because they have lost their place as master of the relationship. The dog has become the leader and the dominant one. When this happens a lot of the joy of having the companionship of your dog is lost, because you are stressed out most of the time by his behavior.
The UK – Pet Lovers
In 2008, it is estimated that around 1.7bn pounds was spent on pet food for domestic animals in the UK, and it is easy to see why. Even when times are hard and homeowners are struggling to keep their heads above water with the depressing economic gloom, their pets remain faithfully optimistic by their side. Owners are pouring their love and affection into their pets and rewarding them by spending more on the finer things in life for them, which for most dogs simply means a tasty bowl of dog food. The UK is a nation of pet lovers and this is exemplified by the increased spend on our pets. Of course, most dogs and cats don’t ask for much, and their dinner is probably the thing they most look forward to each day, which is why pets are so refreshing to have around when times are hard. They adore their owners and ask for very little in return.
Aggressive dog behavior should be stopped because it develops over time and becomes worse. You should be aware of your dog’s behavior. Sometimes small dogs get away with more aggressive behavior because of their size. It is not seen as offensive if they jump on top of you or pull you on the leash. But they too can hurt you or others and should also be disciplined.
Besides being dangerous if left untreated, an aggressive dog is not a well adjusted dog. He will be a lot happier once he has his rightful place in his relationship with you.
To stop aggressive dog behavior, what are your options? You could hire a trainer, but as you know, that is very costly. Also, you will need to know how to establish yourself as the leader in the relationship.
There is a real sense of puppy love going on in the UK at the moment, and its not just dogs that are feeling the benefit of tastier, better pet food. Cats and rabbits are too, as people are realising that their pets come first and spending on a good brand of pet food really is money well spent

Suburban Horsekeeping – Owning Horses in the Suburbs
For most of us, one of the big factors affecting our answer to the question “Do you really want a horse?” is money. What is the average cost of owning horses? Well the fact of the matter is I can’t give you a definite answer due to the fact that cost depends on many different things. Owning a horse can be a very expensive hobby or be managed on a very modest budget. It not so much the initial cost as it is the cost for upkeep
Milk and History
Mongolia is the only place in the world where wild horses exist (the “wild” horses in the US are actually feral). On the Mongolian steppes, tribes of nomads still domesticate wild horses, where they milk them and occasionally slaughter them for meat.
The mares’ milk is used to make a fermented drink similar to yogurt. Milking a wild mare is no easy task; the milker needs to use a foal to start the flow of milk, but then immediately pull the foal away to collect the milk. But the milker must keep the foal close — if the mare doesn’t feel the foal touching her flank, she’ll resist the milking process.
So what are they like?
Long from head to tail but short in stature, Mongolians might look like ponies to those used to the thundering Mustang herds of the American west. But tribal riders love the horses just the way they are. They groom them well, but keep their manes long. Their strong legs and thick hooves are perfect for treading rough terrain. While their wild nature makes them difficult to break, they have a friendly and warm nature once tamed.
Przewalski’s Horse
Similar to the Mongolian breed is another breed called Przewalski’s Horse, the closest living wild relative of the domestic horse. In 1945, breeders brought this critically endangered horse back from the brink — believed to be extinct at the time, breeders found 31 horses and began mating them. Today, there are about 1500 of these animals in the wild.
Nadaam
The Nadaam Festival is a yearly sporting event in Mongolia, featuring horse racing, wrestling and archery. Held each July in the capital city of Ulaanbaatar, the festival begins with an elaborate opening ceremony which includes music and dancing. The horse race is cross-country, and horses race in individual classes separated by age. The top five horses in each class are awarded.
It depends on whose trimming and shoeing your horse, once again you get what you pay for. Lastly if you want to supplement your horse the cost can be anywhere from $10 – $30 for a 50lb bag of grain or feed. If you decide to keep your horse at home, all these things you have to consider and more. I hope I have been somewhat of a help to you, because there is so much more to consider depending on your needs

What You Should Know – Spleen Cancer in Dogs
The spleen is an organ located below the stomach. It contains lots of blood vessels with circulating red blood cells, making it a storage for blood. It also supplies blood, and cleans up old red blood cells.
Dogs may develop masses in the spleen. These can be benign or malignant. Hemangiosarcoma is the most common type of malignant spleen tumor in dogs. This is an aggressive cancer that tends to spread to other internal organs. Once metastasis has occurred, the prognosis is poor.
Mite infestations spread from dog to dog through close contact. While you should clean a dog’s environment to make sure all mites are removed, most cases are from direct contact.
Symptoms of scabies on dogs usually appears on the elbows, ears, chest and abdomen. Signs are red bumps called papular eruptions, which can be extremely itchy. The bumps harden and become crusty if your dog keeps on itching them, In severe cases you may notice your dog becoming emaciated (thin, unhealthy.
How Are Cataracts In Dogs Treated?
Cataracts are treated with surgery. Most canines who have cataract surgery regain their vision. If you decide not to have the surgery, your pet will become blind.
Believe it or not, blind dogs do very well. It’s usually more of a problem for the owner than it is for the pet. Blind dogs adjust quickly, and can live long, happy lives. You will need to have your vet monitor your pet’s eyes to prevent any other complications.
Can Natural Remedies For Dogs Protect Your Pet’s Eyes?
Bilberry has a long history in folk medicine an an herb that can stop, or even reverse, the formation of cataracts. Scientific studies show that bilberries, a close relative of blueberries, contain anthocyanins, which are powerful antioxidants. These antioxidants neutralize free radicals, preventing them from damaging the eyes.
Would a remedy that contains bilberries help prevent blindness from cataracts in dogs? It just might. In any case, it wouldn’t hurt to try it, especially if bilberry is combined with goat’s rue, astragalus, fenugreek, and chromium, which have been proven to lower blood glucose levels in pets.
Treatment for dog spleen tumor
For both benign and malignant tumors, the recommended treatment is splenectomy. If the cancer spread is minimal, chemotherapy following surgery may prolong the dog’s life span.
To prevent scabies in dogs, you should limit contact with other dogs that may have the condition. Dogs that have scabies should be keep away from other dogs until cured

Housing and Other Care Information – Exotic Pet Corn Snake Care Sheet
Corn snakes, like all other snakes, are carnivorous. Meaning they feed only on the flesh of other animals. Corn snakes feed small rodents and sometimes lizards, although they have been known to take small birds from time to time. A pet corn snake owner, obviously, will have an easier time supplying his or her exotic pets with mice than anything else.
An active corn snake will eat every 10 days or so. It is recommended to feed your corn snake pre killed prey, especially if the snake has not been raised on live prey. A live prey may also turn on and attack a lazy snake that isn’t feeling too hungry and possibly causing severe harm to your pet corn snake.
When to feed a corn snake and how much
Hatchlings are started out with pinkie mice for feedings and as the snake grows, gradually increase the size of the prey by offering fuzzies, crews, then small adult mice or rat pinkies.
Heating
Corn snakes, like all reptiles, cannot maintain their internal body heat. Thus, maintaining the cage at the proper temperature is vital to care of corn snakes. A temperature gradient from 70 – 75 ºF on one end of the cage to 80 – 85 ºF on the other should be maintained to allow the snake to regulate its body temperature by moving from one part of the cage to the other.
The heat mat is the best way to heat the corn snake’s cage. These are rectangular electrical heating pads, sealed in laminated plastic with the electrical cable coming out at one edge. Available in various sizes for different cages and can be purchased at reptile pet shops.
The heat pad should be placed under one-half of the cage, covering roughly half the floor area, thus giving the corn snake a choice of warm and cool areas. To easily monitor temperature, inexpensive self-sticks thermometers can be purchased and applied about an inch above the bottom of the cage on the warm side. A thermostat and heat sensor need to be incorporated in the system, to automatically switch the heat pad on and off as necessary. All items for snake cage can be purchased at a good reptile pet shop.
Lighting
Corn snakes do not need a light in order to survive. In fact, they would probably prefer no light. But most reptile pet owners prefer to put some kind of light in the cage, to see the pet better. An ordinary 60 watt household bulb will be quite adequate. It is not too bright and creating too much heat. The light must be placed at the same end as the heat pad. A mesh guard should be fitted around the light bulb, otherwise the snakes will put their noses right up to the light bulb and burn themselves.
After a several more weeks of one fuzzy, repeat the process you did with pinkies. When your corn snake swallows a fuzzy easily, then try to feed it with two. And after a few feedings with two fuzzies, try it with small adult mice. A full grown Corn snake can eat a medium to large mouse.
It may be helpful to visit a few pet shops to seek advise about exotic pets, make sure you are aware of all the special requirements they need.
Things To Ask
What sort of housing do they require, including the size and shape?
What sort of food do they eat and how often should they be fed?
Are they prone to any type of diseases or problems you should look out for?
Do they require any special equipment such as a UV light or heat mat?
How long is their life expectancy?
Do they need any type of vaccinations?
Do you need any sort of licence to own this type of animal?
If you have children it may be worth finding out how much your exotic pet likes to be interacted with. If you have chosen an animal that does not like to be handled will your family be happy with a pet that can only be looked at and not touched?
The pets are depending on their owners. Always keep in mind that the cage for pet corn snake should provide the same environmental conditions that the corn snake needs in order to survive. Make sure that you find the right place in your house where you will place the cage
