Using Dog Training Devices
Dog training devices come in a variety to types-from the familiar collar and leash we all use with our dogs, to much more sophisticated training devices such as electric fences and electric training collars. The correct use of these devices can stop your dog from barking too much, from running away and facilitate quicker and better results during obedience training.
- Collars: In addition to the flat leather or nylon collar you are surely familiar with, there are two other non-electric training collars- the choke collar and the pinch collar. These types of collars work by putting pressure or a pinch to your dog’s neck and get him to pay attention to your commands. Only put these collars on your dog during training sessions, and be sure to remove them once the training is over for the time being.
- Harnesses: Dog harnesses serve as a substitute for the ordinary type of collar, and fit over your dog’s torso instead of around his neck. Handlers of tracking dogs utilize these harnesses when doing the tracking.
- Leashes: Usually you will just use the normal 4 ft. or so long leash that serves best for walking your dog. In addition to the standard leash, there are also longer leashes for certain types of training exercises, and very short leashes for other types of obedience training work.
Listed below are some of the types of useful dog training devices for solving a variety of dog training problems. Many people have gotten good results with these, when more traditional training failed to correct a persistent behavior problem.
- Electric training collars: Electric collars work through applying a very small shock via remote control. The shock is described as being similar to the strength of shock you get from static electricity. Your dog will definitely pay attention after that, but it is not at all harmful. Your dog will not even realize it is you applying the shock. Many people whose dogs have resisted normal dog training methods are able to correct their dog’s behavior problems rapidly. Before using one of these, be sure you understand the proper way to use it to make sure you are not abusing your dog by a misapplication of the shocking. Only put these collars on your pet when doing the training or until you have solved a particular problem.
- Electric Bark Correcting Collars: These are electric dog collars that work to stop a dog’s incessant barking problems. One variety is a shock collar, which emits a warning tone prior to the shock. You can set up a delay between the warning tone and the shock, so that your dog can still give a warning without getting shocked.
- Besides the shock collar, there are also 2 other styles of barking abatement collars. One of these collars works by spraying a mist of Citronella oil-which dogs just hate. It will not take long for him to associate the bad smell with his barking, and cut it out. There is another type of collar that will make a sound that dogs can’t tolerate, and thus stops the barking. There is also a collar that is a combination of both of these deterrents.
- Underground electric fences: You make the electric fence by burying a wire underground to mark the perimeter of the area you want to keep your dog in. Your dog will wear a special collar that picks up signals from the wire to a controller you attach to the wire. As your dog gets close to the perimeter the collar emits a warning signal to let the dog know he is near a boundary. A shock will be emitted if your dog does step across the wire. He should soon associate the warning sound with an impending shock. You need to train your dog by walking around the perimeter so he can understand his new fence less boundaries. But after that, the hidden fences have proven to be very effective.
- Pet Training Mats: These work to keep your dog off specific places-such as counter tops or furniture, or from passing through a doorway. They work by emitting a shock at the moment they are touched by your dog’s paws.
